01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the vibrant Lower East Side of Manhattan, Empanada Mama LES emerges as a flavorful beacon for lovers of Latin American cuisine, particularly Colombian and Surinamese delights. This bustling eatery masterfully marries authentic tradition with modern flair, boasting an extensive menu that promises to satisfy both the curious foodie and the seasoned gourmand.

At the heart of Empanada Mama LES’s appeal are their exquisite corn flour empanadas. Each one is a delicate pocket bursting with carefully balanced fillings: imagine sinking your teeth into the rich, smoky BBQ Pulled Pork empanada, where slow-roasted pork melds harmoniously with sautéed onions, peppers, sharp cheddar cheese, and a tangy BBQ sauce, all for just $4.65. The Cheese Corn empanada offers a gooey, comforting embrace of mozzarella that melts with every bite, while the Ground Beef Corn stays true to traditional Colombian roots with perfectly seasoned meat. For those seeking something earthier, the Portobello empanada—a vibrant blend of mushrooms, cabbage, ginger, soy, and fresh herbs—delivers a unique umami punch that’s delightfully unexpected.

Beyond empanadas, Empanada Mama LES offers indulgent all-day breakfast options that feel like a warm hug first thing in the morning. The Typical Colombian Breakfast, with its savory scrambled eggs mingling with tomatoes and scallions, accompanied by white rice mixed with red beans and a golden arepa, transports your taste buds straight to the heart of Colombia. Or opt for the hearty Mama's Steak & Eggs: a perfectly grilled skirt steak paired with fried eggs and buttery papas chorriadas, served alongside a crusty grilled baguette—the kind of dish that reminds you food is both sustenance and celebration.

Whether you’re planning an intimate meal or hosting a lively gathering, the Mama's Party Packs provide a convenient yet lavish feast. Wizardry in a box, these combos include crowd-pleasers like cheeseburger, bourbon chicken, mac n’ cheese, cheesesteak, buffalo chicken, and even birria empanadas, alongside satisfying half-tray sides. These party packs clearly speak to a passion for blending variety with quality, guaranteeing smiles all around.

Step inside, and you’ll instantly feel the welcoming energy that defines this neighborhood gem. The spacious Lower East Side location offers plenty of seating for a relaxed dine-in experience, but also smart kiosks for speedy takeout—a perfect blend of old-school hospitality with modern convenience. Customers consistently praise the staff’s warmth and attentiveness, with mentions of Felipe, Evan, and Tucker—all of whom create a vibrant, home-like atmosphere that turns first-timers into regulars. One reviewer captures this perfectly: “the energy they bring makes it feel like a home rather than just somewhere to eat out.”

What truly sets Empanada Mama LES apart is their commitment to authenticity without sacrificing accessibility. The passion in every dish, the friendliness in every interaction, and the consistent quality make this restaurant a true standout in Manhattan’s crowded culinary landscape. Whether you come seeking the rich aroma of Colombian breakfasts or the creative zest of Surinamese flavors, Empanada Mama LES invites you to indulge in a sensory journey worth savoring time and time again.

For those in the know, this spot is more than just a restaurant—it’s a celebration of Latin American culture and community, served with generosity and a smile. So whether it’s the tender pork of the cubana arepa or the spicy kick of the chicken arepa, your palate is in for an unforgettable treat.

This 24/7 spot is an amazing spot for a bite at any time of day. This location in the LES, has lots of seating to dine-in but also kiosks for you to order at for take-out. Service is kind and fairly quick. They have a huge menu of lots of different empanadas as well as other Mexican dishes and sandwiches. I got their oxtail one, spicy chicken, greek spinach and feta, and their viagra (seafood stew with tiger shrimp and crab). Favorites were definitely their viagra and oxtail as both were so flavorful and filled with protein. I can definitely see this spot being a favorite late-night go to.

I got the cubana Arepa and the flavor on it was incredible. That pork was so tender and delicious, it made it a great experience. I did have to pull off half of the cheese on it bc it was way too much, but that’s just personal preference. Our server was very kind and informative when it came to ordering. I have celiac so I asked if the wheat and corn empanadas shared a fryer and sadly they do, so no empanada for me. I noticed after the fact that the arepa was also fried, so I’m not sure if those share a fryer as well. I took gluten-ease and an allergy pill preemptively, so I’ll update if there’s any noticeable adverse effects for my fellow celiacs. They have plenty of non-fried options too just fyi! Edit: I did feel a little weird after the arepa, so best to just avoid the dried food if you have a strong sensitivity/cealiac.

Got a bunch of these empanadas to go, various flavors including a delicious buffalo chicken. The empanadas are pretty beefy. Two are more than enough to fill you up. Shout out to the platinos chips and guacamole. The Crew ate at a nearby bar on pool league night. Like a mid week, impromptu Friendsgiving.

We were a large party of almost 20 people, I called the restaurant 10 min before arriving and they set up tables for us by the time we arrived. Our server Felipe was extremely accommodating and patient, he helped make a birthday surprise super fun. Had a great experience overall and the food was delicious!
